TOP STORY

The Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium is underway with all eyes on Jerome Powell’s keynote address today. Wall Street is anxiously waiting to get any insights regarding potential rate cuts this fall, however, Powell may be preparing to deliver a message that tempers expectations rather than fuels them.

Earlier this month, Wall Street assumed the Fed was going to cut rates with odds of it happening at 92%. Yet, in just the past week, the market has started to shift, with those odds now down to 75% and getting lower each day.

This, of course, has caused the market to tumble with the S&P 500 down six of its past seven sessions as investors take profits among all the uncertainty. Will Powell hint at a policy shift today, or will he keep markets guessing as he waits for more data?

Yesterday: U.S indexes fell Thursday, with the S&P 500 posting its fifth decline in six sessions, weighed down by continued weakness in large-cap tech. Treasury yields rose as solid economic data and hawkish Fed commentary reduced expectations for a September rate cut. The U.S. dollar strengthened, while oil prices edged higher. Weekly jobless claims rose to 235,000, slightly higher than expected, and Flash PMI data showed stronger-than-expected activity in both services and manufacturing, though rising price pressures remain a concern. Retail earnings remain a focus this week, with Walmart being the latest major company to report. The retail giant topped expectations and raised its full-year outlook, echoing a broader trend among retailers.

On Our Radar: All eyes will be on Jackson Hole this morning as the market awaits remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell for any insights on potential rate cuts this fall. On the earnings front, all eyes will be on PDD Holdings (PDD), which is set to report earnings before the market opens on Monday.

MARKET HISTORY

On This Day In 2018…

The S&P 500 officially entered the longest bull market in history, lasting 3,453 days without a 20% drop. Starting from a low point back in March 2009, the market had been steadily climbing for over nine years. While some debated the exact start date (thanks to a 19.9% dip in 1990 that just missed the technical “bear market” cutoff), the run was still record-breaking, fueled by strong corporate earnings, low interest rates and investor optimism.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The markets are always changing, and they are always the same.“

After months of high-stakes recruiting and sky-high compensation offers, Meta has abruptly frozen hiring across its AI division — and it’s not just a routine pause.

Behind the scenes, sources say the company shelled out hundreds of millions to lure talent from top rivals like OpenAI, Apple, and Google. One offer reportedly reached $1.5 billion. But now, just as the AI race heats up, Meta is slamming the brakes.

What triggered this hiring halt — and what does it mean for the future of Meta’s AI roadmap? Read on for the full story.
