Yesterday: U.S. indexes surged Monday and finished at the highs, as Apple led the way with a big analyst upgrade, combined with optimism around a potential resolution to the ongoing government shutdown. The Nasdaq climbed the most at 1.37%, followed by the Dow (1.12%) and S&P 500 (1.07%). The rally offset recent volatility driven by regional bank loan losses, U.S.-China tensions and weakness in AI names. Investor sentiment was also lifted by earnings results, which continue to be strong across the board, as well as comments from the National Economic Council suggesting the 20-day shutdown could end this week. Lastly, the 10-year Treasury yield dipped back below 4% and oil settled at a 5-month low as supply glut fears continue to mount.

On Our Radar: With the continued government shutdown, there aren’t any notable reports coming out today. However, all eyes will be on earnings this week with a bevy of notable names, including Netflix (NFLX), Texas Instruments (TXN) and Capital One (COF) reporting results after the market close today.

MARKET HISTORY

On This Day In 1987…

Just two days after the historic Black Monday crash, where the Dow plunged more than 22%, the market staged a remarkable comeback, soaring 6% the following day and then another 10% (186.84 points) the day after. This dramatic rebound saw nearly 90% of NYSE-listed stocks advance, signaling a swift shift in investor sentiment amid extreme volatility. The event highlighted the resilience of the market and underscored the importance of structural safeguards, like circuit breakers, which were introduced in response to the crash to help prevent future market freefalls.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It is impossible to produce superior performance unless you do something different from the majority.“
