📉 No Rip, Just Dip

The overall market got crushed on this Freaky Friday. Plus, are investor expectations for Netflix too high?

Happy Friday, Zingernation! You know how I said if it ain’t broke don’t fix it when it comes to buying the dip? Well, it might be time to call the plumber. Today, there was no buy-the-dip activity — just dip after dip, like a Midwestern Super Bowl party.

In retrospect, it was an ominous sign when banks across the board reported strong earnings this morning, but sold off anyway. The bright spot is that markets won’t be open tomorrow, so even if investors wanted to keep selling, they can’t. My portfolio’s safe from bear attacks… for 48 hours at least.

Today’s Price Action:

$SPY: -1.38%
$QQQ: -1.59%
$DIA: -1.21%

Also, forget EVs. The future is all about electric planes, and there’s one company that’s ahead of the competition.

TODAY’S MOST VOLATILE STOCKS
TODAY’S TOP STORY
Going Crazy GIF

Briefly: Bored of the market going up seemingly every day? Today’s your lucky day. Volatility is back, and it’s hotter than ever.

So Basically: The volatility started to creep back early this week, after inflation outstripped estimates for the third straight month in March, leading investors to slash their expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.

So Then: Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East — namely, rising indications of an Iranian attack on Israeli soil that President Biden said could occur “sooner rather than later” — fueled a surge in commodities like oil and gold.

But Still: The start of the earnings season saw major banks slightly surpassing estimates. Despite that, the overall negative sentiment still triggered a sell-off.

So What? On Friday, the CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, spiked the most in more than a year. Following recent hotter-than-expected inflation data, the likelihood of a June rate cut plummeted from 60% to 20%. Some Wall Street analysts now expect only one rate cut this year, and not until December.

With strong support from investors and a skilled team, Horizon Aircraft is poised to lead the air travel revolution with its innovative technology and modern solutions.

ONE TRADE IDEA NEXT WEEK

Briefly: Netflix is set to report first-quarter financial earnings next week. Here’s what analysts are expecting.

So Basically: Piper Sandler analyst Matt Farrell has a Neutral rating for the streaming leader. Farrell also raised the price target from $550 to $600.

So Then: Sentiment for Netflix went from "better than feared" in the third quarter to "how big is the beat" after the fourth-quarter report, he added.

So What? After the strong Q4 report, expectations are elevated for Netflix in the first quarter, Farrell said. "We believe investors are looking for material upside to the 4.5 million net adds number for Q1," Farrell said.
