Yesterday: U.S. indexes finished lower Monday, as escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran rattled investor sentiment ahead of a busy week of corporate earnings and inflation data. President Donald Trump's announcement that he would reinstate a blockade on Iranian shipping through the Strait of Hormuz sent oil prices sharply higher, with Brent crude surging more than 9% for its biggest one-day gain since 2020. Treasury yields climbed as investors worried higher energy prices could complicate the inflation outlook. Attention now turns to the Q2 earnings season, with analysts expecting S&P 500 companies to deliver 22% year-over-year profit growth. Full-year earnings are projected to rise 24%, the strongest annual increase since 2014.

On Our Radar: Wall Street will be paying attention to the latest CPI inflation data, the NFIB Optimism Index, and comments from several Federal Reserve officials for clues on the interest rate outlook. On the earnings front, all eyes will be on the banks again with Morgan Stanley (MS), Bank of New York Mellon (BNY), and BlackRock (BLK) all set to report earnings before the market opens on Wednesday.
