Yesterday: U.S. indexes finished higher Tuesday, as Wall Street looks past geopolitical tensions to continue the New Year’s rally. The Dow climbed nearly 1% to finish above 49,000 for the first time, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also ended the session higher, supported by gains in healthcare and tech. In commodity markets, oil prices fell after reversing early gains, and gold and silver rose again as investors asses ongoing geopolitical developments. Lastly, on a historically basis, periods of three consecutive years of double-digit S&P 500 gains, the returns in the fourth year have been modest, with the index delivering an average gain of just 1.5%. However, there is optimism this time for another strong year as earnings are expected to grow by nearly 15% this year.
On Our Radar: Analysts will be watching job openings, U.S. factory orders, and the ADP employment report for fresh clues on labor market momentum and the underlying strength of the economy. On the earnings front, all eyes will be on Constellation Brands (STZ), and Jefferies Financial Group (JEF) which report after the market close today.

MARKET HISTORY
On This Day In 1782…
The Bank of North America opened in Philadelphia as the first commercial bank in the United States, laying the groundwork for the nation’s financial system. It was also the first company to have an IPO in America, issuing 1,000 shares at $400 per share. Prominent figures such as Benjamin Franklin were investors, and the U.S. government became the largest shareholder, owning roughly 63% of the bank’s stocks. Over the following centuries, the Bank of North America evolved through a long series of mergers and reorganizations, which ended up getting acquired by Wells Fargo in 2008 during the financial crisis.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“The traditional value investor asks ‘Is this cheap?’ and then ‘Why is it cheap?’ We start by identifying a reason something might be mispriced.“
— David Einhorn
