Last Week: U.S. indexes rebounded on Friday, recouping some of the prior session’s sharp sell-off that had pushed the S&P 500 more than 5% below its October peak, marking the first meaningful pullback in 146 trading days. The rebound came after New York Fed President John Williams signaled a chance for further rate adjustments in the near term, which Wall Street interpreted as a December move, despite the minutes showing how deeply divided officials are. Despite Friday’s rebound, major indexes posted steep weekly losses, with the Nasdaq down 2.7%, while the S&P 500 and Dow were down 2%. The declines come largely as high-flying tech stocks come back down to earth, as well as other assets such as Bitcoin, which continues to make lower lows. The VIX, Wall Street’s “fear gauge,” closed the week up nearly 20% (23.40), and is near a six-month high.

MARKET HISTORY
On This Day In 2008…
In the depths of the global financial crisis, the U.S. government orchestrated a landmark bailout of Citigroup, providing more than $400 billion in cash and guarantees to help the bank stay afloat. The move was crucial in stabilizing the bank and preventing a potential collapse across the broader financial system. In the year leading up to it, Citigroup’s market value rose to more than $270 billion, only to drop all the way down to $20 billion right before the bailout. Today, the company has recovered significantly, with a market cap of more than $180 billion.
